TOURNAMENT GUIDELINES
Tournament Staff
- The tournament staff for each game consists of the Tournament Director, Referee, Scorekeeper, and (optionally) one or more Assistants.
- A single person may serve in multiple roles.
- e.g. the Tournament Director may also be the Referee for the game.
- Any decisions made by the Tournament Director are final and irreversible.
Tournament Format
- There are up to 24 teams in a single-elimination bracket.
- Depending on the number of teams, one or more teams may receive a bye as determined by the Tournament Director.
- Each team will be informed of their potential game times in advance.
- The winner of each game moves forward in the tournament; the loser is eliminated.
- A previously eliminated team may be re-introduced to the tournament as a wild card, per criteria set forth by the Tournament Director.
- The last two teams remaining will play for the Tournament Championship.
Game Setup
- Each game will begin with an unopened deck of Bicycle® Spades Playing Cards™ . The referee will open the deck and display the Big Joker, Little Joker, 2♦, and 2♠ (the Jokers) to all players.
- This is a standard deck of playing cards. There are 4 suits (Spade ♠, Diamond ♦, Club ♣, Heart ♥) of 13 cards each, plus the Big Joker and Little Joker.
- The 2♣ and 2♥ are removed, leaving 52 cards.
- The losing team will receive the played deck as a consolation prize.
- Card Ranks:
- The 4 highest cards in descending order are the Big Joker, Little Joker, 2♦, and 2♠. The Jokers are considered Spades.
- The remaining cards in each suit in descending order are: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3
- A spade is ranked higher than a card in any other suit.
- In the absence of a spade, the suit of the lead card of a book is ranked higher than any other suit in that book.
Win Conditions
Each game will be played until one of the following conditions are met:
- Target Score: One team scores 500 points or greater
- The first team to reach the target score wins the game. If both teams reach the target score on the same hand, the team with the higher score wins.
- If the score is tied, one additional hand will be played. The team that wins the most books in the final hand wins the game.
- Time Limit: 30 minutes has elapsed
- The current hand will be the final hand of the game. The team with the higher score after the final hand wins the game.
- If the score is tied, the referee will deal a card to each player face up until a Spade is shown, starting from the player to the left of the dealer. The team whose player gets the first Spade wins the game.
- First Hand Wheels: A team earns 10 or more books on the first hand of the game
- Consecutive Sets: A team fails to earn their bid in 2 consecutive hands
- Total Sets: A team fails to earn their bid in 3 hands in a game
Game Rules
- First Hand: Each team will earn 10x the number of books won during the first hand.
- Note: see First Hand Wheels in Win Condition section
- Bidding: After the first hand, the team opposite the dealer button bids first as a team.
- After both teams have bid, each team can elect to increase their bid. A team cannot decrease their bid.
- The minimum bid per team (aka “board”) is 4 books per hand.
- Sets: A set occurs when the number of books a team earns is fewer than the bid.
- The team loses 10x their bid for an unsuccessful bid.
- Note: see Consecutive Sets and Total Sets in Win Condition section
- Sandbags: A sandbag is an earned book above the bid.
- 100 points will be deducted from a team’s score for every 10 sandbags earned.
- Lead with Spades: A player can only lead a book with a spade after a spade has been played in a previous book, or that player has only spades remaining in their hand.
- The Big Joker, Little Joker, and 2♦ are considered spades.
- Wheels: A bid of 10 books in a single hand (i.e. “Wheels”).
- The team earns 200 points for a successful Wheels bid, plus sandbags.
- The team loses 200 points for an unsuccessful Wheels bid.
- Note: earning all 13 books in a single hand (i.e. “running a Boston”) is NOT the end of the game, unless a win condition has also been met
- Blind or Nils: There are no blind bids or nil bids allowed in this tournament.
Violations
- Reneging: A renege (pronounced ‘re-nigg’) occurs when a player has a card that matches the suit of the lead card in a book, but instead plays a different card.
- If a player believes another player has reneged, the challenging player or team must identify the suit AND the book before the referee scores the hand.
- If successful, three (3) books are removed for the reneging team and given to the challenging team. If unsuccessful, three (3) books are removed from the challenging team and given to the other team.
- The removed books count toward the bid for both teams, but do not count as sandbags for either team.
- Calling a renege must occur before the referee scores the hand and without the assistance of tournament staff or any other non-active players.
- Note: A player cannot remove a card from the table once it has been played.
- Board Talk: Board talk of any kind is prohibited.
- 1st infraction: verbal warning from the Referee or Tournament Director
- 2nd infraction: One (1) book will be removed from the offending team and given to the other team. The removed book counts toward the bid for both teams, but does not count as a sandbag for either team.
- 3rd infraction: disqualification of the offending team from the tournament.
- 3 infractions across the entire tournament will also result in disqualification.
